Writings from the Wall
The album ‘Europe’ was inspired and conceived out of the copious journeys I’ve made by air in and out of the vast European continent over the last five years. It has always fascinated me how aircraft stay airborne and throughout the summer and winter flights I would be sat in seat 18 A ensuring a good view from the rear side window.
On one particular flight there was brilliant sunshine without a single cloud in the sky. Far below you could see the patchwork tapestry of Europe stretching to infinity. The aircraft Captain came on the intercom and announced that this particular flight was one of the ‘clearest’ flights he’d ever experienced. It was an unusual feeling staring through the aircraft window across this endless crystal clear world.
One evening while in Baden I sat on my familiar window seat and began strumming some chords. I could smell the European cooking and thought about the Tannen Zapfle beer to accompany the pasta fresh tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. Moments later I’d completed the first part of the song ‘Europe’.
The songs were written and chosen carefully in order to try and create a distinctive European feel. It was my intention to try and steer clear of big guitar grooves by introducing a different dimension to the music. This was achieved by the careful use of ethnic flute accordion lyrical bass electric and acoustic guitars and ukulele.
The album features several vocal tracks which were recorded ‘live’ in the abbey on the sacred isle of Iona in Scotland and boasts such distinguished session musicians as Foss Paterson Arran Ahmun Alan Thompson and Nicola Parov.
Work for the album began in a Devonshire valley before progressing to Woodworm Studios in Oxford. After completion there and due to a series of difficult circumstances the whole scenario was moved to Cava Studios in Glasgow Scotland where the majority of the album was duly completed under my own auspices as sole producer working alongside the esteemed engineer Brian McNeill.
The highlight of the album was a trip to Budapest and a chance to work with the great Nicola Parov one of Hungary’s greatest exponents of the flute. Mastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studio’s London the album marks a corner stone in my musical experience and the beginning of something new within the boundaries of my musical dream.
